Lots of stuff to report

Time has flown by again.  I finished piecing the first red, cream and blue quilt, "Patriot's Home".  I got fabric to back it with today so maybe tomorrow I can get it basted and ready to quilt.  I also now have the other red, cream and blue one, "Two Piece Puzzle" all cut out and ready to start machine piecing.  Well, all but the outside border, I still need to get fabric for that but it will be a while before I need it.  I had the fabric for the thirteen filler blocks for the Snowbound quilt all cut out so I stitched them all together, too.  Now I can put the rows together as I finish the applique snowmen blocks.  The May block came out today.  When I finish it I can put the first two rows together.  I'm hoping that will put me way ahead for finishing it in December.  In the evenings I have been working on more of the little ornaments I'm sending out with the swap blocks.  I want to get this months blocks in the mail soon since one set gets to travel all the way to Karen in England.  This swap is just too much fun!

My little flower garden is coming along.  My wonderful husband dug the old rose bush out for me.  Then we dug up the sprinkler head and he put an extension on it so it sits up a little higher above the ground.  I dug a bunch of roots out of it so I don't get any surprises with what is growing.  The dirt is all turned up really well so maybe by the end of the week we can buy some flowers to plant.  I know a little of what I want, but gardening in New Mexico is so different than gardening in Illinois was.  Now I have to have plants that love full sun and are drought tolerant.  In Illinois I needed shade loving plants so this is a huge change.  Anyone have any suggestions?   I also have a hanging container for growing tomatoes up-side down and one for hanging strawberry plants.  They will be an interesting experiment for the summer.

Check out the really fun patterns on The Wooden Bear web site and Kelly's blog.  She has some new fabrics coming out and a new book.  I first saw one of her patterns in a Fons and Porter magazine and just fell in love with her work.   Her pattens and designs are simple and fun.  Her web site gives some ideas of ways to use her patterns to dress up dish towels and other fun stuff.  Hope you enjoy it!

It has been a long day and I want to sit and sew!

  1. Sounds like you've been busy, busy too! Be sure to show us some pictures of your quilting soon. I'm also getting the flower bug; worked in the front yard all day Tuesday! I was bone tired! Still have a few plants left for the back yard. Thanks for the fun web sites! ---"Love"

  2. Wow! That made me a little tired just reading it and thinking about all you're doing. I'm with Love - show us pictures! Sounds like you've got some fantastic projects going.

I tried those upside down tomato planters last year and they dry out fast so keep an eye on them! I'm not sure if I liked them or not, but I'll be using them again this year to give myself a second opinion.

  3. Here in Texas it's hot and dry during the summer and I found a nursery that specializes in native plants, so I would suggest you look for a place like that and get some native plants that can tolerate the sun and heat. then you won't need to be watering constantly.

  4. You are really busy sewing and gardening. I plan to try the tospy turvy tomato planter this year too. I don't have much of a green thumb, but I'm going to give it a try.
    Happy quilting

  5. Hey, that's good advice. Go with your native plants as much as possible. But also investigate the Sedum family. There are long tall types and short ground cover types. They are succulents (they store water) and come in green, blue, maroon, purple and black (just to name a few) and they bloom, too. This plant family is a particular favorite of mine. Pictures, pictures, we want pictures, LOL.

  6. It's a good thing you get through so many projects Marsha. It keeps up the group average - especially since I'm lagging behind! Good luck with your gardening. Mine seems to flourish better if I leave it alone! I'm off to look at the Wooden Bear, thanks for the link. Cheers Ann :-)
