Yesterday I wore myself out . . .

picking raspberries!

We left the house about 7:30 am, stopped for a burrito for breakfast and drove about 140 miles to the Salman Raspberry Ranch in La Cueva, NM.  It's northeast of Santa Fe.  It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day, great for being outdoors.  We arrived there just before 10:30 am and started picking berries.  They furnish containers to hold the berries, each one holds about 2 lbs.  By noon we each had full containers.  We had walked down one row and back up another.  All together we had 5 lbs of beautiful berries.  That's all five pounds in the picture.  After changing shoes and cleaning up a bit we stopped in their store and bought a few things.

The U pick it fields are all red raspberries but they are experimenting with black raspberries and have a few containers for sale in the store.  Had to try some.  We bought some raspberry fudge and some raspberry cremes, too.  One package of fudge and the cremes went to our neighbors along with some of the red raspberries after we got home.  On the way home we stopped in Las Vegas, NM for lunch, too.  Not an inexpensive day out, but lots of fun.  It was after 3:00 pm when we got home, got cleaned up and delivered goodies to our neighbor.  The rest of the evening we took it easy with aching backs and sore muscles but well worth the work.

I have finished the last block of Henrietta Whiskers, have the borders on and the applique in the borders is finished.  It is now ready for layering, pinning and quilting.  I have to go to the fabric store for fabric for the backing and binding and batting.  I think I will do that tomorrow.  For now here is a picture of Block 9:

I haven't decided how I will quilt it yet but I am anxious to finish it so I can hang it up!

Guess I will go get busy!

  1. Yum! Raspberries are my favorite! Lucky you! We buy ours at Costco - a lot easier, I guess. The Henrietta Whiskers block is darling. Can't wait to see it all finished!

The berries look sooo good. I might have to make a trip to the fruit market. Will not be as good as fresh picked, but......
    Rest up those sore muscles.
